In India, philanthropy is an ancient and deeply embedded religious and cultural tradition.

The notion that industrial organizations and wealthy families have for long been giving back to society in various forms, is nothing new in India. Disparities in society have long existed not in wealth alone, but also in infrastructure, health, education, economic opportunity, and access to new technologies, which in the modern world are increasingly becoming the channels of these good deeds of 'giving back'.
The care of the underprivileged and vulnerable members of society, built into social institutions and structures, now needs a rethink in this era. India's future depends on a mindful process of equitable social and economic development which makes prosperity inclusive. Even in this modern era vast majorities of the rural population have little or no access to basic services education, health, food, and shelter.
India's growing population, social upliftment and fundamental development needs have compelled the government to reach out to corporations and mandate that over a certain net worth they spend 2 percent of their last three years' average profits on corporate social responsibility (CSR).
