India closed 2025 with electric vehicles (EVs) accounting for about 4 percent of new- car sales, down from a peak of 5.4 percent in August.

The slide followed the rollout of GST 2.0, which narrowed taxes on internal combustion engine vehicles and widened the price gap with EVs, blunting their appeal.

Carmakers, however, have lined up major launches for 2026, alongside plans to expand charging infrastructure and ease concerns over driving range-two constraints that have held back wider adoption.
