KZN business uses farming for economic development of province
Overcoming the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic's negative effects on food security, the Mondi Zimele programme has developed 122 emerging farmers in KwaZulu-Natal.
This includes 17 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) comprising 11 co-operatives, and six individual farmers.
Since the launch of the programme, over 1 098 households have experienced positive impacts, with the creation of around 320 permanent and seasonal jobs.
Additionally, the programme has generated approximately R2 million in revenue, showcasing its significant contribution to both economic empowerment and community development.
General manager Nelly Ndlovu said Mondi Zimele is the business development arm of Mondi South Africa. She said the agriculture SMME programme is part of a broader initiative that provides technical and business support to emerging farmers.
Ndlovu said the programme focuses on communities where Mondi and SiyaQhubeka Forests operate in Zululand, northern KwaZulu-Natal, and there were plans to expand to other close-by communities.
