Case IH geared to support sorghum production

Sorghum is known for its ability to withstand adverse conditions like drought and heat, and its versatility makes it a good alternative to other crops. But a number of aspects need to be considered when producing it.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

One of these is crop rotation. During a sorghum farmers' day held recently near Standerton, Mpumalanga, Bertus Swart said sorghum works well in his rotation system with maize and soya bean.

According to André Olwagen, strategic marketing manager and product portfolio manager at Case IH, the yield potential of any crop is mostly contained in the germplasm. Therefore, it is critical that farmers create the optimum growing environment with the best planting conditions to realise a cultivar's potential.

To optimise production, Olwagen says farmers need to take stock of what happened during the previous season and then start the new season by asking the right questions.

"By asking the right farm-appropriate questions, farmers will get the answers they need to enable them to make the best decisions for the upcoming season," he explains.
