Call to declare 'disaster' after North West wildfires

Extensive damage caused by wildfires in North West has taken a toll on farmers in the province.
The victims of the wildfires that destroyed almost 500 000ha in North West between May and October this year are calling on government to officially declare the affected districts as disaster areas.
This was according to Eric Stoch, chairperson of the North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association, who told Farmer's Weekly that the application for the declaration was still being processed.
"[The application] is based on the fact that 15 216 burn scars [land surfaces burnt by wildfires] have resulted in the loss of over 448 000ha so far in the wildfire season, which has seriously affected both commercial and communal farmers.
