Healthy indoor air is essential for healthcare facilities, driving new standards and smarter technologies for safer environments

IS YOUR FACILITY BREATHING EASY?

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has become a critical focus for building owners and facilities managers worldwide. Nowhere is this more vital than in healthcare environments, where patients' health and recovery can be directly impacted by the quality of the air they breathe. Despite spending most of their time indoors, many people remain unaware that indoor air pollution can be significantly worse than outdoor pollution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air; a statistic that carries profound implications for healthcare facilities aiming to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

For healthcare providers in a country like India, where climate conditions demand high energy use for cooling and ventilation, ensuring optimal indoor air quality presents both a challenge and an opportunity. With rising awareness of airborne infections, enhanced sustainability targets, and rapid growth in healthcare infrastructure, FM managers are under increasing pressure to adopt smart, data-driven strategies to monitor, manage, and improve indoor environments.

The danger of indoor air pollution

Public perception often equates air pollution with outdoor conditions such as traffic emissions, industrial activity, or dust storms. However, indoor environments, particularly enclosed healthcare spaces, can trap contaminants such as microbial pathogens, and particulate matter. These pollutants originate from a variety of sources, including cleaning agents, building materials, equipment, human activity, and inadequate ventilation systems.
