Action Over Ideas: Leadership Lessons from My Journey
Banking Frontiers
|February 2025
Throughout my professional journey from my early days at Allahabad Bank to Punjab National Bank and now in a leadership role as Chief Technology Officer & Chief Digital Officer at Union Bank of India - I have realized that success is not driven by ideas alone but by the ability to take decisive action.

Leadership is about confidence, ownership, execution, and transforming challenges into opportunities. Over the years, I have faced situations where I had to navigate resistance, make tough decisions, and drive change. Each experience reinforced one fundamental truth: Leadership is not about waiting for instructions; it is about taking ownership, solving problems at the same time always focusing on strategic goal.
TURNING RESISTANCE INTO COOPERATION: THE POWER OF A WIN-WIN APPROACH
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is the importance of collaboration and creating win-win situations. Early in my career, I was given the responsibility to implement a major transformation initiative that faced overwhelming resistance from employees and stakeholders. The challenge seemed insurmountable, and at first, even I had moments of self-doubt. However, instead of pushing directives from the top, I took a different approach - I engaged with the very people opposing the change.
Recognizing their influence, I made them part of the core team responsible for the transformation. Rather than positioning the initiative as a threat, I helped them see how they could be active contributors to the success of the organization and, in turn, gain recognition for their leadership. This approach turned skeptics into champions of the cause. The experience taught me a valuable leadership lesson: People resist change when they feel excluded, but when they are made stakeholders, they take ownership and drive progress.
This experience reinforced that proactively engaging stakeholders and addressing their concerns openly can turn opposition into cooperation. Leadership is not just about solving problems in isolation - it is about aligning interests and ensuring that change benefits everyone involved.

Aaya hoon toh kuch leke jaunga
Two things unlearned in 2024: Unlearning can be one of the most challenging aspects of life because what we've learned often stays with us. (i) However, one of the most important things I've unlearned is taking my health for granted. After facing significant health challenges, I've made a conscious effort to prioritize my well-being and gradually detoxify my lifestyle. (ii) Another key realization for me has been that there’s no age limit to learning. When I took on the role of CEO at ITI Mutual Fund, I had to step into a new world filled with fresh responsibilities and learning opportunities. As the saying goes, 'with great power comes great responsibility,' and I believe that to lead effectively, one must be committed to continuous learning and personal growth.
