Discover Dinokeng: beyond the Big Five
Go! Drive & Camp
|October/November 2023
The Dinokeng Big Five Reserve is a favourite for weekend getaways, but just past its borders lies an untapped haven waiting to be explored.

Nestled along De Wagendrift Road (D1333) within the broader Dinokeng Reserve - but beyond where the Big Five roam freely - is Nyani Lodge with its brand-new campsite. The reserve is divided into two phases: Phase 1 allows animals to roam freely among properties, while Phase 2 properties are still fenced in. Nyani Lodge sits in Phase 2.
Situated within their wildlife enclosure, the Nyani campsite may be secluded, but there's no need to worry about safety. Only small game roam here, and any lion roars you hear come from the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary nearby.
UPON ARRIVAL, you'll first check-in at the lodge to fill out all the necessary paperwork. Once that's sorted, you exit the main gate and immediately turn right into the wildlife enclosure. Advance arrangements for gate opening are essential, but the lodge plan to introduce a permanently manned gate soon.
The path to the campsite snakes through the veld for just under a kilometre, providing plenty of opportunity to see white blesbok, copper-coloured springbok, and a golden wildebeest. With only six stands, Nyani offers a luxurious camping experience each comes with its own bathroom and kitchen building.
Nyani's charm lies in its tranquillity. There's no swimming pool, playground, camp shop or DSTV; it's just you, the wild, and five other campers. Yet, a short walk to the lodge gives you the option to refresh at the bar or use the WiFi. Prior booking is required for meals at the restaurant.
