|Efficient manufacturing - July 25
Industry 4.0 is redefining manufacturing through the integration of advanced digital technologies and smart processes. In India, this revolution presents a transformative opportunity to boost productivity, innovation, and global competitiveness.
-
The fourth industrial revolution, led by the convergence of cutting-edge digital technologies with manufacturing and industrial processes, has come to be known as Industry 4.0. A revolution that utilises automation, real-time data transfer, and cyber-physical systems to build smart, self-optimising factories. In India, with the manufacturing sector being central to economic growth and 'Make in India’ being the country's national priority, Industry 4.0 is an opportunity that can drive productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness globally.
Core Technologies Powering Industry 4.0 in India
Internet of Things (IoT): IoT is at the core of Industry 4.0, allowing machines, sensors, and control systems on the manufacturing floor to get connected. Indian businesses are soon implementing IoT to provide predictive maintenance, real-time asset tracking, and intelligent energy management. For instance, Tata Steel has applied IoT-based solutions to track equipment health and streamline production efficiency. The use of IoT minimises downtime without warning and provides better supply chain visibility, two elements essential to India's cost-conscious manufacturing industry.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML): AI and ML are fast emerging as critical drivers of decision-making in Indian plants. Be it demand forecasting and quality assurance or process optimisation, AI-based insights are enabling manufacturers to be responsive. Indian auto majors such as Mahindra & Mahindra are employing AI-based vision systems to detect defects and assemble accurately. In addition, startups in India's tech community are creating customised AI solutions designed for mid-sized manufacturers, extending the reach of smart manufacturing to a broader industrial base.
