India's Consumer Electronics Boom: From Assembly Lines to Advanced Manufacturing

India's consumer-electronics industry is entering a new phase of technological maturity. Backed by bold policies, localised production, and rapid adoption of automation and design capabilities, the nation is evolving from an assembly hub into a globally competitive centre for innovation and manufacturing.

Over the past decade, India has moved from being primarily an assembly base for imported parts to an emerging hub for consumer-electronics manufacturing. Bold policy choices led by the ProductionLinked Incentive (PLI) schemes, Electronics Manufacturing Clusters and targeted component incentives have persuaded global OEMs and domestic champions to scale up factories, invest in local supply chains and treat India as more than just a low-cost assembly destination.

Smartphones and white goods remain the anchor segments. Mobile phone production has ballooned, with major global and contract manufacturers such as Samsung, Foxconn and Dixon expanding capacity across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to serve both domestic demand and exports. Several EMS players report rapid revenue growth as brands shift part of their supply chains out of China, and India's mobile export numbers have risen sharply in recent years.
