Linda Aldous outlines what you need to do before anything porcine arrives on your smallholding

Starting with Pigs - before you start

Over the next few months, we will be looking at starting pig keeping. This is a huge topic and one that needs careful consideration beforehand.

Pigs are intelligent, curious and extremely clean animals. Caring for them is rewarding but, as with all animals, they need the correct environment and care to thrive. Before buying your first pigs, whether you are considering weaners for bringing on for meat, or for breeding, many hoops need to be jumped and legislation that needs compliance. Your pig keeping begins inside your house so get going now!

imageREGISTERING YOUR LAND AND HERD MARK

The land where you intend to keep the pigs, needs to be registered with the Rural Payments Agency (RPA), who will issue you with a County Parish Holding (CPH) number.

The secrets behind maximising incubator hatch rates

Buying quality point of lay hens can be an expensive proposition these days (even if you can find a local source of the breed that you want). Incubating fertilised eggs can save a great deal of money and make many more breeds accessible. If you already keep poultry that includes a cockerel, an incubator means that you can hatch their eggs either to increase your flock or to sell. Hugh & Fiona Osborne have been using incubators for many years and have learned that getting a good hatch means attention to detail.
