Spring 2025

Charming, gentle, and undeniably unique, the Barbu d’Uccle is a bantam breed full of character. This month, Cara Wheeldon shines the spotlight on this captivating Belgian breed with insights from a dedicated poultry keeper

Bearded beauty

With their elegant, feathered feet, fluffy beards, and sweet disposition, the Barbu d’Uccle stands out as one of the most endearing bantam breeds. Known for their standout appearance and friendly temperament, these Belgian bantams have captured the hearts of poultry keepers worldwide.

Fiona, an experienced keeper from High Peak with over 14 years of experience raising d’Uccles, opens up about her long-standing love for the breed and the qualities that make them shine.

FIRST IMPRESSION

It was love at first sight for Fiona when she stumbled upon her first Barbu d’Uccle at an auction. “I first saw these birds in a pen at auction, and after finding out that it was just 50p for the pen of them, of course, I brought them all home!” she recalls. Since then, Fiona has become obsessed with these birds, particularly the popular Millefleur pattern.

Physically, the Barbu d’Uccle stands out with its distinct features. Fiona explains, “The defining physical traits of the Barbu d’Uccle are good, feathered feet, a single comb, your Belgian stance, and a well-defined beard.” Their charming beards are a particularly unique feature, giving them a regal and endearing appearance.

The secrets behind maximising incubator hatch rates

Buying quality point of lay hens can be an expensive proposition these days (even if you can find a local source of the breed that you want). Incubating fertilised eggs can save a great deal of money and make many more breeds accessible. If you already keep poultry that includes a cockerel, an incubator means that you can hatch their eggs either to increase your flock or to sell. Hugh & Fiona Osborne have been using incubators for many years and have learned that getting a good hatch means attention to detail.
