Strong Beau

The part-bred Connie making his championship debut for Britain at the Europeans is a big character but always looks after his rider, finds Polly Bryan
RIDER GABRIELLA BLAKE
“BEAU is a very special boy. He’s not a typical para horse and when we bought him I never dreamed we’d end up doing what we’re doing now. Initially my parents didn’t want me to get him – he was very spooky with every little thing. Even though I am a grade I para rider and therefore compete in walk, I actually wanted him because of his lovely canter, rather than because of his walk.
“It has taken a lot of work to get him to where he is now, but he has really grown up and doesn’t spook now unless there is a good reason.
“Beau is amazing to sit on and ride in the ring. He doesn’t have the big walk of some other grade I horses, but he makes up for it with his presence and the way he carries himself. When he comes into the arena you know it. He loves his job and he loves competing – he has his ears pricked the whole way round.
