Making the best of MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects more than 25,000 Aussies. According to MS Australia, “The progressive neurological disease interferes with nerve impulses from the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, manifesting in a wide range of symptoms that vary from person to person and are often invisible.”

Whether you know someone with MS, have been diagnosed or simply want to educate yourself more, we spoke to experts in the space who share how to live the best possible life you can with MS.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

For someone newly diagnosed with MS, feelings of uncertainty, stress, anxiety and fear are, of course, completely valid and understandable. Neurologist Dr Todd Hardy does want people to understand, though, that while there may be no cure, the future for people with MS is brighter than it’s ever been.

“The last 15 years has seen the introduction of highly effective MS therapies which, if commenced early, can significantly delay, and in some cases prevent, disability due to MS,” he explains. “My advice is that someone newly diagnosed with MS should plan to lead a full and productive life.”

Following her diagnosis 15 years ago, NSW mum-of-four and teacher Maxine Gourley, now 57, wants to reassure anyone newly diagnosed that you’re allowed to feel how you feel, but rest assured there are many ways to manage the condition.
