BBC Radio 2’s Sara Cox tells Robyn Morris how she juggles work and parenting, and why Brits abroad are the best
-
There’s no stopping Sara Cox – she’s been working since her teens, when she was scouted as a model after finishing her A levels – and still shows no signs of slowing down. Sara’s been part of BBC Radio since the late 1990s, and is now a popular household name. She tells us, ‘I can’t see myself doing any other kind of radio if I’m honest. I feel like Radio 1 hatched me and nurtured me and now I’ve spread my wings.’ Sara, 44, now hosts the Drivetime spot on Radio 2 from 5pm until 7pm every week night, a new job she landed late last year. However at the time, the only headlines were about who was going to take over from Chris Evans on the breakfast show.
It was reported that Sara and her long-time friend, Zoë Ball, were both competing for the slot, but Sara insists that couldn’t be further from the truth. ‘Thankfully it’s died down now. People just couldn’t allow two women to get jobs that they really liked. Zoë and I texted each other throughout the whole thing,’ she says. This year, Sara also landed her own weekend morning entertainment show on ITV, The Sara Cox Show. On top of her successful career, Sara has three children, Lola, 15, Isaac, 11, and nine-year-old Renee with husband Ben, who she married in 2013. But while she admits that she feels ‘blessed’ with her life, the presenter also confesses, ‘I am knackered a lot of the time!’
I didn’t always want to be a broadcaster.
