DIGITAL TEST FIELD FOR CONNECTED MOBILITY
Auto Tech Review
|February 2020
In order to pave the way for future mobility, the development and testing of automation as well as the connection of all road users is necessary. With the Aldenhoven Testing Center, RWTH Aachen University and Vodafone have set up a mobility test field equipped with all relevant communication technologies and a variety of track elements.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Today, digital transformation is already opening up undreamt-of potential across all industries. From smart and safe cities to industry 4.0, digital commerce and eHealth to fully automated mobility. Whether cities, companies or everyday life – hardly any area is not affected by the conversion of analogue into digital and thus highly automatable formats. If the challenges of digitisation can be mastered, then there are enormous opportunities for opening up new business models and value creation opportunities. Safety and comfort are improved, the environment and resources are conserved.
In addition to the increasingly powerful digital systems, the required solutions are made possible in particular by an increasingly high-performance mobile networking of all components in an ecosystem, and the different ecosystems among each other, as can be seen particularly well from the example of mobility.
Here, the rapidly progressing automation offers numerous opportunities, but also challenges. Traffic can become safer – in mixed traffic – if traffic situations are safely controlled by automated or autonomous systems. The same applies to traffic efficiency, which means the increase in traffic throughput. Due to their high complexity, inner-city areas place the greatest demands on technology. In addition to the technical challenges, acceptance plays a key role in the successful introduction of the new mobility services. There is public debate on this issue currently. When accidents occur with prototype vehicles, this has a negative connotation. Tests in public transport therefore have a direct influence on the perceived safety level of automated vehicles.

Sound Generation For Enhanced Road Safety
With an ever-increasing number of fully electric and hybrid vehicles entering the market, we are witnessing a change in the acoustic experience in and around the car. The silent nature of the electric powertrain means that other road users miss the familiar acoustic cues that warn them of an approaching vehicle. To remedy this situation, Harman is working on various noise management solutions.

OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY CONTRIBUTION OF TODAY'S AUTOMOTIVE HEADLAMPS
Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS TOP PRIORITY FOR FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE DEPLOYMENT
Increasing levels of electronic content in vehicles result in a large amount of software that is required to run the scenes behind the mechanical aspects of a vehicle. Electronic systems in automobiles are part of every section, from the powertrain to comfort and convenience systems as well as all types of safety equipment. This makes electronics and the software running these systems a critical part of the equation for future mobility solutions. In addition, putting standards in place to measure methods of developing, testing and functioning of such electronic systems also becomes highly relevant.
