THE FAN “My first ever Spurs game was an FA Cup third-round match in 1960. At the time I was 12 years old and living in Newport.
“The previous year Newport had been drawn away to Spurs, and although my Dad and his mates went to the game I was considered too young, probably because they were off to see the bright lights of London after the game!
“I couldn’t believe my luck the following year when Spurs were drawn to play Newport again only this time at Somerton Park, there was no way I would miss this one.
“The big day eventually arrived and my cousin and his dad came down from the valleys and the four of us made our way to the ground, I had never seen such a crowd.
“Although we had tickets for the enclosure in front of the main grandstand, we had underestimated how quickly the ground would fill up and two distraught boys couldn’t see a thing, so we were lifted up and passed over the heads of those in front of us till we got to the railings at the front. At last I got to see Blanchflower, Mackay, White etc. In the Newport team was Bryn Jones, the younger brother of Cliff.
