|Spurs v LASK
Despite our long history in European competitions, we have only twice before faced Austrian teams in competitive action – but have enjoyed friendly matches on many more occasions down the years.
-
It wasn’t until 1984 that we were first paired against a side from Austria in Europe, when we took on FK Austria in the fourth round of the 1983-84 UEFA Cup.
Known as Austria Vienna in England, they visited White Hart Lane on 7 March that year and included Austrian international Herbert Prohaska and Hungarian star Tibor Nyilasi in their line-up. Renowned for their tidy passing game, FK Austria were knocked out of their stride by our combative approach to the game, which was rewarded with two second-half goals from Steve Archibald and Alan Brazil to give us a healthy first-leg advantage.
Spurs: Parks, Stevens, Hughton, Roberts, Miller, Perryman, Ardiles, Archibald, Brazil, Hazard (Hoddle), Dick.
Out of both domestic cups and trailing behind in sixth place in the First Division, we travelled to Vienna for the second leg knowing the UEFA Cup was our only hope of silverware that season.
It showed in our performance as well, as we produced an excellent display at the Prater Stadium to book our place in the semi-finals. An early goal from Alan Brazil extinguished any hopes the Austrians had of a fightback and effectively killed off the tie. A stunner from Ossie Ardiles with eight minutes remaining wrapped things up, even though we did concede twice.
We went on to defeat Hajduk Split in the semi-finals before famously beating Anderlecht on penalties in the second leg of the final at the Lane.
Spurs: Clemence, Stevens, Hughton, Roberts (Thomas), Miller, Perryman, Ardiles, Archibald, Brazil (Falco), Mabbutt, Galvin.
