It is known as cricket’s bible and its publication every April is looked forward to with undisguised eagerness by almost anyone associated with the game. Wisden has been published every year since 1864 and one of its most durable traditions is Five Cricketers of the Year which has been a feature since 1889. It is an honour that cricketers look forward to achieving though for long the list included only those who performed with distinction in the English season. However, in recent years the scope has been enlarged to include cricketers who have performed admirably even outside England. For example, VVS Laxman was chosen for the honour in the 2002 edition on the basis of his splendid batting against Australia in India in 2001.
