Cardiff rolls out the yellow carpet for Tour winner

Thomas Feted As Wales's Biggest Hero

Yellow has been splashed across the Welsh capital this last week after Geraint Thomas’s Tour de France win. Cardiff City Hall and Caerphilly Castle were both lit up in yellow and the local ice hockey team Cardiff Devils (which Sky rider Luke Rowe is a fan of ) changed its logo from red to yellow. There was even a campaign to get a post box in the City painted yellow — but that idea was quashed by Royal Mail.

Celebrations are set to reach new heights today as the city stages an official homecoming for Thomas. The Welshman has become arguably Wales’s biggest sporting hero since his Tour victory.

“He deserves all that celebration,” said long-time friend, team-mate and fellow Welshman Luke Rowe on the Tour's last day, when he was told about some of the events being planned in Wales.

Thomas’s old coach at the Maindy Flyers youth cycling club, Debbie Wharton, said his win was having a huge positive effect on the sport at home.

“The kids have been really inspired by it all. Even the general public, anywhere you went, if people knew you were a cyclist, would ask if Geraint Thomas was going to win the Tour de France."
