In the days before everyone had a car, the average club racing cyclist would ride his or her race bike (which was also usually their work bike and training bike) to time trials, grass track meetings or road races. Before the race they’d strip off unnecessary equipment — saddlebag, lights, mudguards — and leave it all at the start to pick up later.
