When Tom Dumoulin summoned what little energy he had left after nearly weeks of battling first one and then a second British pretender to his Giro throne to attack Chris Froome on the Cervinia climb on Saturday, there was an unequivocal response from the crowd waiting in the cool, thin air at the top.
“Via Tom!”
This was no partisan mob, and a polite ripple of applause ensued when Froome countered, but there was no questioning where the popular support lay.
