Liverpool, England Joanne Carr is hailing her son, Dougie McInerney, as her guardian angel.
-
When Dougie was an infant, he suddenly started refusing to nurse from his mom’s right side. The change concerned Joanne. “My gut feeling was that something wasn’t right,” Joanne told the Mirror UK.
During a self-exam, the mom of two found a small lump on that breast, which prompted her to visit a doctor. Tests revealed that Joanne had invasive ductal carcinoma, an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Doctors began treatment immediately. After eight rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove residual cancer cells, Joanne is in remission.
If not for Dougie, now six years old, Joanne believes she would have found the lump too late. “It was a complete miracle,” she says. “He saved my life, without a doubt. He’s a little angel.”

Florence, Italy. I’d been there before on one of those scruffy five-dollar-a-day youth-hostel jaunts through Europe, but now, just graduated from college, I was wondering what to do with my life.
