Ex-senator reveals how toxic abuse took its toll

FORMER senator Lorraine Higgins has revealed the horror of being stalked and receiving four death threats during her time in politics.

The ex-Labour member said she had to put up with a relentless “bombardment” of abuse including graphic rape and death messages.

She said politicians are facing increased levels of abuse thanks to the anonymity of the internet and female politicians are particularly vulnerable.

She told RTE’s Brendan O’Connor: “There was a lot of focus on sexual violence, rape, physical appearance, you name it.
