Owls boss laments wasted chances but sees hope in recruits

- Chris Dunlavy

MONK RALLY EARNS POINT

GARRY Monk claims he got the reaction he sought after savagely criticising his misfiring players in midweek.

Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Wigan – the Owls’ fifth in six games – had prompted a remarkable outburst from the normally reticent Monk, who called the display an embarrassment.

“I have seen enough in the past month to tell me a lot,” he said. “There are some players who shouldn’t be here at this club. That’s the honest truth.”

But after stopping the rot with a foul-strewn, chanceless stalemate against in-form Millwall, the 40-year-old said his team had proved a point.

“My overall feeling after this game is better than it was after some games this month,” said Monk, who left Jordan Rhodes, Kieren Westwood, and Sam Hutchinson out of the squad.

“I knew they wouldn’t be confident after what’s happened. But in terms of attitude and commitment, I got what I asked for.
