‘Do you know where your children are?” asks the mysterious Jonah in the TV series Runaways. Apparently, these are the words of a US public-service television announcement that played from the 1960s to the 1980s to signal the start of a youth curfew about 10 pm or 11 pm. Yes, youth curfew. In many parts of the US, people under 18 can be picked up by the police.

As we do our second annual 13 Reasons Why web-series watch, I find myself thinking about this, because one consistent theme in this fictional characterisation of the real things that happen to young people is that their parents don’t know where they are, or, if they do, what they’re doing.
