CONSIDERING FLORIDA’S ever-changing weather patterns, mariners must remain diligent and always be on top of the current and forecasted conditions. Fortunately, NOAA’s National Weather Service provides updated marine forecasts with access to near real-time reports to ensure safe navigation amid the fluctuating conditions encountered throughout our year-round boating season.

Whether it’s a tropical disturbance blanketing the region with 30-knot winds or a winter Nor’easter with powerful swells pummeling the coast, the Sunshine State sees its fair share of deteriorated sea conditions. Among the many meteorological and environmental monitoring technologies utilized to provide weather, water, and climate data, forecasts and warnings, floating weather stations moored to the seafloor are absolutely essential to the safe navigation of both recreational and commercial mariners. Thanks to coordinated efforts of many programs including NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center (ndbc.noaa.gov), the Coastal Data Information Program (cdip.ucsd.edu) based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Integrated Ocean Observing System (ioos.noaa.gov
