Design Journey with Pinakin Patel

Circa 10 years ago, Pinakin Patel had launched his latest furniture designs and the industry was abuzz. Word was that these new pieces were the most expensive,made-in-India designs. But Pinakin-remained unfazed. He’s played a pivotal role in the world of architecture and interiors for over45 years now. His contemporaries and clients are in no doubt of his creative vision. Pinakin’s unparalleled manner of thinking, positive outlook, enthusiasm and motivation makes him a force to be reckoned with. These attributes evidently spill over into his incredible repertoire, which includes a mix of residential projects as well as bespoke furniture. Another big news was his move from Mumbai to Alibaug back in 1999, and Pinakin adds, “ended up being a modern-day Robinson Crusoe!”

We’re most intrigued by Pinakin’s childlike search for beauty in everything—from art, craft and furniture—and their correlation to interiors and architecture. A passionate designer at heart, he says he looks up to the likes of “Charles Correa for his work, Hafeez Contractor for his drive, and MF Husain for his energy.” Pinakin adds, “I was mentored by my guru Dashrath Patel, the late Indian painter and sculptor, and I’ve designed a museum in honour of him. He came into my life very late but clarified all my doubts, gave me the confidence to believe in myself, and to understand that ultimately all artistic endeavours are interdependent.”
