It was not only the beginning of a new era for the history of the world, but also for a young German entrepreneur, Martin Bulthaup, who lay the foundation of what would go on to becoming a household name in kitchen design.
THE BEGINNING
Martin Bulthaup set up “Martin Bulthaup Möbelfabrik” in Herford, the former centre of Germany’s furniture industry. He was a man with a vision that revolved around the concept of the kitchen as a welcoming space where the family members come together not only to cook but also to interact with each other; hence its design would have to be a comprehensive process that involves thought, form and material. Encouraged by his escalating sales in Bavaria, he invested in a saw mill in Bodenkerchin in 1951. Under his able leadership, a young team of seven skilled craftsmen and employees started to deliver Bulthaup’s hot selling sideboards to the adjacent areas, which rapidly expanded all across Germany. For the next nearly three decades, Bulthaup was like a bull sprinting towards the red cloth of success. In 1963, a factory was set up in Bodenkirchen, followed by another production facility in 1966, where the assembly lines were introduced.
