Most regulations, be it for food or drugs or cosmetics, have one common requirement which states something like -- the declarations and claims “should be not misleading, false, or exaggerated”.

When Is It Fair To Call A Food ‘Natural'?

Such a requirement comes from a natural justice point of view that no consumer should be cheated and declarations should be factual. When it comes to foods and label declarations related to either nutrition content and levels or health benefits detailed guidelines, requirements and nature and extent of proof to support the declarations have been laid down. The Foods Safety and Standards Act of India also does this.

One aspect time and again is raised and a number of people, from various sectors, ask me is – when can a product claim that it is natural? (an additional Indian version of this is when can a product claim it is herbal?). More consumers ask me this question after they have watched or heard media advertisements claiming products to be natural or herbal. It is appropriate that the current position on this is explored which is attempted in this column.

It should have been rather easy to say what is natural. But trying to define or give a guideline or even put a regulatory definition is not easy as would be realised by the time reading this write up is completed. Most common way to put would be things that exist in nature and are cultivated, grown, obtained by digging the soil or deep inside the earth or water is natural. It is not that simple. “From a food science perspective, it is difficult to define a food product that is ‘natural’ because the food has probably been processed and is no longer the product of the earth” says information available on Food and Drug Administration (FDA) United States’ website.

Industry Banks On Technology For Milk Safety

In October 2019, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released a full report after carrying out a survey on safety and quality of liquid milk in the country. Although the survey results hint towards demolishing milk adulteration perception, an in-depth analysis of the report reveals that 1 in 10 packets of milk purchased by consumers could be unsafe. Hence more is required in the dairy sector in order to address the issue of milk adulteration at all levels. On a whole, further steps are required to be taken to achieve transparency and efficiency in the dairy sector of India through public private partnership and best use of technology.

Curbing Obesity

With a mission to lead and drive global efforts to reduce, prevent and treat obesity, the World Obesity Federation (WOF) launched World Obesity Day in 2015 that is now observed globally on October 11. With more than 135 million individuals affected by obesity in India, abdominal obesity is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVDs). The WOF estimates about three out of ten Indians are expected to be obese by 2025. India needs to gather some learning lessons from other countries where the industry is collaborating with regulators to achieve regulatory environments that are conducive for product reformulation, labelling and marketing regulation, ensuring a range of healthy options for consumers.

FSSAI HR and Capacity Needs to Grow

India has taken a new and different step in bringing change in food safety culture. There was demand from the industry and many others for a single unified law for food safety. Even though the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 (FSSA 2006) completed 10 years last month the Act actually came into effect from August 5, 2011, five years after it was passed, following the setting up of FSSAI which framed the rules and regulations under the Act.
