Ray Meagher was moments away from heart failure

Australian acting legend Ray Meagher, who plays the irascible Alf Stewart in Home And Away, has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit cast after undergoing emergency open heart surgery earlier this month.
The much-loved star was due to take a holiday with his wife Gilly when a routine health check revealed he could have been just hours from a potentially fatal heart attack. His cardiologist spotted three serious blockages in his arteries that required immediate intervention. Ray, 75, was given a triple bypass the next day.
“We were all packed up and ready to drive north [to the Sunshine Coast] but if we had gone without seeing the cardiologist, well, you could have had a heart attack behind the wheel,” says the actor. “You kill yourself, you kill your wife, or some other poor innocent people. It’s horrific to think what could have happened.”
