Does equality for women mean oppression for men?

- Reema Behl

Save The Indian Man!

For generations, Indian women have been fighting for equality. Recently, apart from having to shrug off labels like ‘man-hater’, feminists have also had to deal with pushback from almost every section of the society. It hasn’t helped that the cause has sometimes been hijacked by those with vested interests. In recent years, there have been news reports of a surge in the number of ‘false rape’ cases filed and instances where laws, like 498A aka the dowry law, have been misused. We spoke to two women on either side of the fence for perspective on where things stand. Is our legal system biased towards women? Former journalist and documentary filmmaker Deepika Bhardwaj believes it is men who are the voiceless victims in Indian society today, and lawyer and women’s rights activist Vrinda Grover explains how deep-seated patriarchy can warp perceptions about privilege and oppression.
