AppleMagazine
|AppleMagazine #405
With Apple all-but-confirmed to be releasing a trio of new iPhones this September, this week we decided to take a closer look at the latest rumors and leaks, go hands-on with a dummy model, and consider what the future holds for the world’s most iconic smartphone…

THREE ALL-NEW iPHONES
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Apple is expected to drop a trio of new iPhones this year, in the same vein as the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, two with an OLED display and one with an LCD variant to lower costs.
The high-end models are expected to feature an impressive new triple-lens camera system, whilst the iPhone XR successor will feature a new dual-camera system for the first time. Although major design changes are not expected, analysts have predicted some exciting internal and external changes to push iPhone into the next generation and pique the interest of consumers who’ve been slow to upgrade their phones, keeping older devices for longer.
But before we delve into those changes, a quick word on naming. We won’t know for sure what the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR successors will be called until Tim Cook and Co hit the stage in early September, but there are a couple of rumors so far. Following Apple’s traditional biennial naming (numbered release, S release), one would assume that the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 11, but as this year will be considered more of an S release with smaller changes, some have suggested models will sport XI and XRI, or even XT names. Apple may be holding off on a numbered release until 2020, when it’s expected the firm will add 5G to the iPhone and overhaul its design, replacing Face ID with screen-wide Touch ID.
