It’s been almost 17 years since Avril Lavigne burst onto the music scene with her debut hit, “Complicated.” Looking back, the 34-year-old can’t believe how far she’s come. “I’ve gone through a lot,” says Avril, who’s dealt with two failed marriages (she divorced Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley in 2010 and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger in Lyme disease. “When something like that loves rock ’n’ roll,” that happens to you, you’re really forced to look at the simple things in life. I’m just grateful to be alive and” because it gives me life.” As she celebrates the release of her sixth studio album, Head Above Water (in stores now), Avril reflects on the past and looks toward the future.
