Busted as spies who hid key Navy weapon system in peanut butter

A NAVAL engineer and his teacher wife — who plotted to sell top-secret plans for U.S. nuclear submarines hidden in a peanut butter sandwich — got in a jam for passing the lunch to an FBI agent disguised as a foreign spy, say federal sources.

The bizarre secret sandwich for-cash trade was one of a series of transactions made by Jonathan and Diana Toebbe, who are charged with violating the Atomic Energy Act, according to the FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).

The turncoat Maryland couple were busted Oct. 9 after a probe that began in December.

The feds claim they paid the 42-year-old engineer, who worked at the hush-hush research facility Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pa., a whopping $100,000 in cryptocurrency for passing nuclear propulsion secrets in tiny, blue, plastic-coated SD memory cards hidden in a Band-Aid wrapper, a pack of chewing gum and the sandwich.
