The Team That Would Not Listen

That all is not well at the White House would be an understatement since more than 37 top aides in the Donald Trump camp have already quit office. When Ezra Klein, the Founder of Vox, interacted with those who work with President Trump, he was told that this in fact is a management crisis since "working in this White House is a frustrating, dispiriting, and often surreal experience, and it exposes staffers to both legal and reputational risks." In the corporate arena, things are not very dissimilar from the above, and as the case reflects, the management as well as the team members are equally responsible to ensure greater rapport, coordination and synergy among each other

The Team That Would Not Listen

Manoj Sitaram stared out of the window of his cubicle which afforded a dismal view of a grey sky and grey high rises shrouded in a blanket of smog. It looked as gloomy as he felt. It had been three months since he had taken over as the Area Sales Manager for Delhi at IBI Excelsior Insurance and he had made little headway with the team. He thought he was a likeable and a respected person. Everyone at his old team in Lucknow loved him. Bhupen still called him every week with news from his team and requested for advice on handling a difficult agent or a tough client. Zafar still sent him messages on his achievements. Even R.K.P had called to wish him on his birthday last week. It had been a promotion of sorts for him to move to Delhi 2, an important but tough market. Vishnu, the RSM had told him, "Champ, I have faith in you. I am sure you will be able to handle this team. If you crack Delhi 2, then nothing is impossible." His predecessor, Amit Sharma had left suddenly to join another Insurance firm. Amit had delivered his numbers, but there had been rumours about certain practices followed by his team, whispers about 'wrong selling.' Though such a thing was unsubstantiated since there was no visible proof, Manoj could not help but wonder if there was something he did not know.

How Can They Fire Her?

It is a common phenomenon in the corporate landscape to misinterpret the inability to respond to a query by a Manager as a serious lapse which at times leads to termination of his/her services. As a fallout, not only do they risk losing out a person with superior managerial skills, they also dampen the spirit of the juniors in her department, leading to sinking morale and reduced engagement.

Nurturing A Coaching Culture

Jerry, who worked as a manager in several restaurants in the US was very popular among the waiters in his restaurant. So much so that whenever he moved to a new job, the waiters would follow him there because they loved him for his positive and motivational attitude. When asked as to how he remained positive at all times, he replied, "Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I always choose to learn from it."

An Aggrieved Woman?

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition And Redressal) Act, 2013 has mandated that it is illegal to sexually harass women, working or otherwise, at the workplace. However, it certainly is strange that the law did not feel the need to include men, and, also did not clearly demarcate the boundaries of liability for the employer.
