When Wally’s Luca Bassani writes cheques, the results are seldom boring. In 2003 he unveiled the astounding gas-turbine 118Wallypower, a 17,000hp monster that looked like Darth Vader’s dayboat and hit nearly 55 knots. Then in 2009 there was the WHY53. It was described as a ‘floating island’, built on an offshore oil industry ‘Ramform’ hull design and powered by electric motors. With a beam of 125ft (38m) on an overall length of 190ft (58m), it was the size of a mid-size airport terminal.
