The naked Boxer R has always lived in the shadows of its fully-dressed RT and Rambo-styled GS siblings. Does it deserve more?

BMW R1250R - Forgotten Gem

Of all the dreams we have and all the places we imagine when we want a happy place’, midweek Northamptonshire, in the wet, on a naked bike, is quite possibly and understandably not on that list.

Yet, by the end of the day I am smiling: Is it wind? The bike? The roads? The fact that I’m lucky enough not to be chained to the desk on a Thursday?

A bunch of us are riding the new BMW R1250R for the day, set up by BMW UK. The sceptical old hack in me wonders why the small fanfare when most new bikes are launched in sunny Spain or further to a European or even world audience. Are they short on budget? It’s BMW, so that’s hardly likely. Is it a UK market-only model? No. So to launch the bike in Northamptonshire means it is either not very important, or there aren’t many changes from the previous year. Pah.

THE COMFORTABLE TRUTH

It is true that the naked Boxer doesn’t sell as well as the adventure or touring variant. But it has evolved constantly over the years and is the closest relation to the original bikes the Bayerische Motoren Werke company became famous for producing. Yet it suffers from the success of its louder, heavier siblings – the RT and the GS. This new incarnation, the R1250R, benefits from all the toys and trinkets we’ve tested on the GS and RT, like the larger ShiftCam engine, as well as a few other additions, such as the fancy TFT full-colour dashboard, Hill Start Control (HSC) and Automatic Stability Control (ASC). It’s also had a makeover, albeit a subtle one. So who, or what, is it for? The R1250RT is an amazing, mile-munching machine. The R1250GS does the same, but with an Action Man dress code, complete with swivelling eyes. But sometimes you – whisper it – just want to go for a little ride; maybe even staying in the same country. This is where the R1250R fits in.

BUMBLE BEE BRILLIANCE

The range of models in Triumph's entry level 400cc category has been expanded with a bike that stylistically sits a little truer to the 'Scrambler' epithet.

CORRECT MIXTURE

Back in the thrilling days when major factories duked it out for the promo bennies of winning the Daytona 200, it was fascinating to walk along pit lane during practice, seeing the bikes and their technologies close-up.

Some Like it Hot All about heated clothing

Being cold on a motorcycle isn't just unpleasant, it's potentially dangerous! The human body is designed to maintain a stable internal temperature of around 37°c. When it drops by just a couple of degrees, hypothermia starts to kick in, causing symptoms including shivering, mild confusion, lack of coordination/fumbling hands and drowsiness. None of which help you control a bike. And that's only mild hypothermia!

As another chunk of monthly mileage takes my NT1100 over the 10,000-mile mark, I assess my current and future relationship with it. Overall, the Honda gets a good score, with a similar vote coming from a fellow owner.
