THE INTERIOR OF THE NEW CADDY FLAGSHIP IS REVOLUTIONARY, AND THAT’S A GOOD THING

THE ONE We've Been Waiting For

In 2019, it was the Chevrolet Corvette that we were desperate to see, and the wait seemed interminable. This year it’s the opposite end of the vehicular spectrum that had us transfixed: The big daddy of bling, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, had us waiting, wondering, worrying it might not live up to the hype.

The fifth-generation Escalade, on sale this summer, has the future of the franchise riding on its upsized 22-inch wheels.

It’s not easy styling a massive SUV, but Cadillac has continued its “Y” branding strategy, where it offers both a luxury and a sport variant for each nameplate.

The Luxury models have the expected chrome and other bright bits, but the bling factor has actually been dialed back, and the result is a more sophisticated look for a mature vehicle.

Escalade’s first foray into Sport offers enough blacked-out features to differentiate the model with tasteful restraint. It would be easy to put an intimidating grille on an already massive vehicle, but designers kept the proportions measured. As the grille and wheels grew, the Cadillac crest emblem was also upsized. Designers were cognizant that Escalade buyers like a powerful-looking SUV, which in turn makes them feel powerful driving it. But consumers also wanted more sophistication in the evolution of the exterior design. The headlights have simple yet intricate layers, giving them depth but not too much jewelry.

IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS TO OFFER QUICK-TIME BATTERY SWAPS

John and Jane Public aren't warming to electric cars at the rate many in the automotive industry thought they would, and that's mostly because EVs still can't match the cost and convenience of gasoline-powered alternatives.

SMOOTH BUT GLITCHY

We're less than a year away from seeing “millions” of autonomous Teslas roaming the globe, if Elon Musk’s April earnings call prognostications hold true. How’s Full Self-Driving Unsupervised going? To find out, we flew to the first test market, Austin, Texas, and caught seven rides in the initial Model Y Robotaxi. (Austin is unique among American cities in offering a choice of autonomous ride-hailing services, as Waymo has a fleet of its Jaguar I-Pace cars available via the Uber app. So we resolved to attempt a comparison, beginning on page 86.) Note Tesla’s Robotaxi is not to be confused with its two-door Cybercab; rather, it’s based on a long-range dual-motor 2026 Model Y Juniper.

More Than a Charging Station, More Than a Fast-Food Joint, the Tesla Diner Might Just Be Crazy Enough to Work

In case you need the reminder, car companies don't own and operate restaurants. Then again, they don't own and operate gas stations, either, and Tesla has proven owning and operating its own charging network was a brilliant business decision. The Tesla Diner, though, is uncharted territory. Will history repeat itself?
