Sketching The Future Of CVs

With the European CV industry as the backdrop, Gianenrico set the tone for his keynote address by briefly touching upon the history of the International Truck of the Year (ITOY) consortium that includes CV publications from 30 countries. He also spoke about CV Magazine’s association as the Indian representative to ITOY. Explaining the journey of European CVs through the various development cycles, and with the help of a thoughtfully put together visual presentation, Griffini shared the journey of European trucks through various emission regulation cycles starting with EuroI. He stated that the EuroVI trucks are 60 times cleaner than the EuroI trucks. “This was made possible by the availability of low Sulphur fuel,” he mentioned. Showing a slide that highlighted the ‘age of performance’ versus the ‘age of emission’ in a journey starting from 1970 and ending at the current stage, Griffini made an interesting observation that the average speed of trucks has gone up whereas the fuel consumption has gone down in proportion. “This,” he said, “is seen from the time the EuroI Emission regulations were implemented in 1992, EuroII in 1996, EuroIII in 1998, EuroIV in 2005, EuroV in 2009, and EuroVI in 2014. Expressing that the ‘age of CO2’ has begun as the CV industry propels towards 2020, Griffini stated, “If the fuel consumption figures of EuroVI trucks are significantly lower than EuroV trucks, the second generation EuroVI trucks are even better by six to seven per cent.”
