Mathew & Ghosh Architects A Duality In Design
Domus India
|January 2018
Located on an urban site surrounded by existing buildings, the House with a Veil is perched high at the second floor level, among the foliage of the trees. Its veil-inspired screen on the street-facing side adds to the aesthetics, while protecting the house from natural elements, providing privacy, and allowing the architects to open up the house on the other side into a tropical-forest-like garden – all aligned to the inhabitants’ aspirations for their dream home.

FROM THE ARCHITECTS’ PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The story begins with a real estate entrepreneur couple from New Zealand. They came back to Bangalore to manage the family business. They were in search of an architect for their dream of a tropical home that would be as open as the forest while being in the heart of the city. It was to be a house protected from elements such as sound, dust, etc. as well as the neighbours, just like a clearing in the forest, hidden away, with its own sunlight, rain, and joy. Rainwater harvesting, as well as all other services, are as per norms. Airconditioning is limited to bedrooms and the audio-visual room, to recreate the forest effect with natural ventilation.
