Six-Monthly Flu Jab Rule Sparks Debate

Horses competing with British Dressage will have to have more frequent boosters for influenza
NEW rules on flu vaccinations have headed the discussion surrounding the new British Dressage (BD) regulations.
From 1 December, horses must have had an equine influenza booster within six months of competing at a BD show.
This has been the case under British Eventing rules since February, is a requirement at a number of venues and is currently recommended by BD. Under British Horseracing Authority rules, the requirement is nine months and under FEI rules it is six months and 21 days.
BD’s announcement sparked widespread discussion.
CEO Jason Brautigam told the AGM on 12 September at Stoneleigh the final wording is being worked on for 2020.
He added he would ask the board to look at this wording, as well as dispensation for horses who have severe reactions, plus a six-month membership option.
In a statement on 10 September, Mr Brautigam said: “It is vitally important we take our collective responsibility to reduce the risk of equine influenza in the UK and we need to base our vaccination rules on the latest advice from veterinary experts.
