Why Can't That Cow Stand Up? (Part 2)

There are several reasons why an animal may be unable to stand up on its own. If you discover it in time, you may be able to save its life. Here are tips on preventing and treating this condition.

As mentioned last week, a recumbent animal lies on its side or chest for longer than normal and cannot stand when prompted to do so. Various diseases and conditions can cause the problem. These include malnutrition; birth-related problems; fever; bone, joint and feet problems; and eating toxic plants.
TREATMENT
A malnourished animal must receive clean water, good quality feed and adequate nursing as soon as possible. It is also a good idea to administer a multivitamin injection.
If the animal is lying in the sun, move it to a shady place with enough bedding and a non-slippery floor. Remove dung regularly and keep the floor and bedding clean, dry and warm.
