As we focus on the African rainforests this month, we could not resist the temptation to publish an article about a very cool custom gun – the CZ Rainforest. The brainchild of our own hunting editor, Stefan Fouché, the CZ was developed during long hours around campfires, sipping good whisky, and in Ruark’s Trading Post, the in-store deli of our local Safari Outdoor gun shop that serves some of the best coffee in Pretoria. The rest of the CZ team consist of Hancke Hudson, who has almost a quarter of a century’s hunting experience all over Africa, especially the dense Cameroon rainforests, and Jaco van Vuuren, master gun builder and co-owner of Morkel & Crouse Riflemakers. Stefan describes the CZ Rainforest as “a reliable, straightforward working rifle … the ultimate setup for hunting dangerous game in the densest, most extreme conditions, and that with the utmost confidence”. Well done, CZ team! Hancke shares his rainforest hunting adventures with us in “Hunting the forest dwarf buffalo” and “Hunting the bongo”. He also guided American client Cynthie Fisher on a tough bongo hunt in Cameroon. On this hunt, she also took a blue duiker, a Peter’s duiker, a forest sitatunga and a red river hog. Read all about it in “Challenges in Cameroon” . Over the past 27 years, André Roux has regularly hunted eland in many different parts of Africa. He says the best eland hunting he has ever done undoubtedly was in the Central African Republic, describing it as “eland hunting in its purest form”. In “Hunting eland” , he gives valuable advice on hunting these big antelope, saying their behaviour is pretty much the same everywhere.
