In this winter issue Neville Barnard tells us where to look for mirror carp. He fished the following dams and shares his experiences: Kwaggashoek, Rietvlei, Florida Lake, Wemmer Pan, Buffelspoort, Tzaneen, Ebenezer and Klaserie.
Terry Babich also loves fishing dams, but he targets barbel – on fly! He explains that he turned to fly fishing for a few different reasons, boredom being the first, and his inquisitive nature being the second. Thirdly, it is not that expensive at all, as he fishes at the dams where he already practises bait fishing. Still on the topic of barbel but moving abroad: Christopher Caine further explores the fishing venues of the idyllic English countryside and got very excited when he caught his first-ever barbel there!
Ever heard of Nooitgedacht? Rudolph Venter and his friends visited this less-known fishing venue and were pleasantly surprised with great catches when targeting bass with artlure. Field editors Frik van Zyl en Henriëtte Lubbe share their experiences after having visited two angling resorts that are safe, reasonably priced and offer good accommodation – Fisherman’s Hangout and Zandfontein Visvang at the Vaal Dam.
July is traditionally the month that trout go into full spawning mode. Fly-fishing expert Rohan Koegelenberg talks about tactics for landing these spawning fishes.
