The hospitality industry has come a long way and architecture and design have, undoubtedly, played an important role in its evolution. Today, we see unique, dynamic concepts that titillate the senses and tempt guests to extend their stays. This, compounded by the explosion of properties that have opened in the past two years, particularly in Asia Pacific, was the reason why we made hospitality our focus for the Annual 2020.

We start with a round up on where the industry stands and the major trends underscoring it. This is followed by a selection of 10 hotels and resorts from around the world, chosen for their being aesthetically valuable, well-executed and unique from a design standpoint.

Look out for Shishi-Iwa House, which apart from being a retreat, was an opportunity for the award-winning Shigeru Ban to imbue into a project his own style and personality into every nook and cranny. From Malaysia comes the adaptive re-use project that is Liu Men Melaka by Idea Workshop and RDM Design, who have successfully conserved and converted an 80-year-old shophouse into a boutique hotel.

Interspersed between these projects are four visual spreads that showcase furniture and fittings from top brands, grouped by design themes, to purchase for your next hospitality project. We hope you remain checked into the Annual 2020 for the whole year.
