This edition marks the eighth anniversary of Essential Madeira Islands and it is always
special for us to celebrate this occasion during such an exciting festive period in
Madeira such as Christmas and New Year.
In this issue we revisit the tradition of this season and explore the reasons behind it being
such an engaging period. The reason for this is possibly because it is such an earnest
and firmly-rooted tradition, as the first New Year fireworks on the island were carried out
over 100 years ago.
We have created this edition themed around innovation based on tradition such as the
alternative shows of the Madeira Casino which explore an innovative concept without
the traditional feathers or the Reid’s Palace Hotel which abolished the use of a tie in the
Dining Room not forgetting to mention the traditional streets of Funchal which have
come to life with a new dynamic.
This edition also saw us revisit the Il Gallo D’Oro for an update on how it has changed
in the last 6 years since becoming the first and only Michelin-starred restaurant on
the Island.
