A new market survey has revealed that families in Lagos and Abuja are now spending up to ₦300,000 monthly to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, underscoring the continued rise in the cost of living across Nigeria’s major urban centres.
The survey, which examined food prices across key markets in both cities, found that an average household of four to five people now spends between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 monthly on feeding, depending on dietary choices and consumption patterns. It further showed that an individual requires about ₦1,500 to ₦2,000 daily to meet basic nutritional needs, translating to roughly ₦45,000 to ₦60,000 per month.
For most families, this has pushed daily food expenses to between ₦9,000 and ₦10,000, driven largely by the rising cost of essential food items such as rice, beans, garri, eggs, vegetable oil, meat, and fresh vegetables. The report attributed the high cost of maintaining a healthy diet to persistent inflationary pressures in the food sector, alongside structural challenges affecting supply and distribution
