Apart from being the best friend, guide and companion, dogs are also
instrumental in ensuring our protection. Th ey assist police and military
forces in discharging their duties. However, that’s not the story we are
focusing on.

In reply to a Right to Information (RTI) query seeking to know what the
Indian Army did with its old dogs and horses, it was told that dogs and
horses that were deemed unfi t for a month’s active service were ‘disposed
of by humane euthanasia’. Yes, shocking but true! Th e saviours of man and
humankind are being killed since they can’t discharge their duties for more
than a month because they are old or ill. Our Cover Story Instead of Medals
& Love, Army Canine Comrades are Euthanised on Retirement brings home
the point that Army’s no home for old dogs and horses; once in, the animals
can never leave, alive!
