Like mother, like daughter

Jane is scared that setting up her mom with her husband’s uncle was a bad idea…until she sees the sparks start to fly in the best way

Hmm…I don’t think it’s going well.” Jane’s husband, Brian, peeked from the window to the backyard. “Your mom seems… miffed. I thought she’d like my Uncle Jason.”

“And I thought this would be a terrific Mother’s Day,” Jane grimaced. “Mom usually loves board games and competition.”

“I think the problem is that they both like competition,” Brian said with a sigh.

Sitting in the blossom-filled garden at the table under the apple tree, looking like a spring postcard, Jane’s mother, Rose, and Brian’s Uncle Jason were playing backgammon. Only they seemed more intent on arguing than playing the game.

Jane had set up her music player on the porch to set the tone. But this also meant that she couldn’t hear anything from inside the house where she was preparing lunch.

“Okay, enough snooping!” Brian smiled. “We tried.” Brian filled glasses with lemonade. “Let’s just get through lunch.”

Jane squeezed his hand. “You go ahead,” she said. “I’ll be out with the sandwiches.”
